China Lawyers Unsure of Copyright Laws

A lawyer from China Law Blog was recently shocked to discover that his firm’s website degin had been ripped off (Via Peking Duck).

I rather suspect the site won’t be there too much longer, so I’ve taken screenshots for journalistic and archival purposes:

n-line finds this highly entertaining…

As if this wasn’t funny enough in itself, it turns out the offending website is run by a competing firm! The icing on the cake is that the victim’s firm advertises their IP legal services and one of their recent articles is on IP problems facing corporations in China. Sweet irony… :)

From the n-line galleries:
CK1 becomes OK1 ;)

Seriously though, IP law remains a major problem in China… I don’t envy the firm having to sort this out at all.

Of course n-line isn’t a hypocrite and doesn’t own any of the very evil pirate CDs or DVDs that come from any of the many many markets all over China. Nor does he appreciate the really excellent 5 yuan (US 0.7 / UK 0.35 ) prices… :)

4 pearly little gems of wisdom to “China Lawyers Unsure of Copyright Laws”

  1. 1 China Law Blog

Thanks for running this post as it helps gets the word out and thanks, in particular, for documenting this. Strange thing is that I do not really think of any firm as a “competitor” as there is more than enough China work out there and there is only so much any one firm can do. We have very close relationships with a number of law firms throughout China, which, in many ways, makes this even more troubling.

  2. 2 Nick

You are very welcome, I’m sure you’ll get lots of trackbacks on this one…
I thought I’d seen just about everything that could be copied, copied, now I know better :)

Best of luck sorting it out.

  3. 3 Asia Biz Law

Along with China Law Blog and others, we’ve followed the developments on this irony closely. According to IP Dragon, Mr. Lehman of Lehman, Lee, and Xu (the firm running China Blawg) is a Who’s Who of Chinese trademark law. Paired with the fact that China Blawg completely renovated their site within 24 hours of the media attention, it seems that Lehman, et al, were suckered by a lazy web designer. China Law Blog has expressed a sentiment of ‘no hard feelings.’

Cheers to the parties involved for effectuating a quick and civil solution.
